Nervous Patients

It's quite common to be anxious about dental treatment, especially if you've had an unpleasant experience at the dentists in the past. But dentistry does not have to be uncomfortable or painful. In recent years modern dentistry has changed for the better - and treatment can now be completed in a comfortable and even pleasant way.

Our Harley Street team of dentists does everything we can so that our patients are not anxious or in any pain. We take our time to be gentle and considerate and also try to find out what particular aspect of dentistry a patient finds stressful.

There are also some tools that make it easier to wean you back into regular dentistry and to allow you to have whatever treatment you to put you in a place where your trips to the dentist are merely routine check-ups.

Local Anaesthetic For Pain-Free Dentistry

Effectice 'local anaesthesia' (by injection) is always given to numb the teeth when there is any chance at all that treatment might be unformfortable. A topical anaesthetic gel is applied to the first gum before so that the surface of the gum is already numb, making the injection pain-free as well.

Sedation For Nervous Dental Patients

Sedation can be given either intravenously by injection or by inhalation.

Intravenous Sedation

Intravenous sedation makes you sleepy, relaxed and unaware of most of the treatment while it is being carried out. This is not the same as a general anaesthetic. The technique is very safe and you maintain all your safety reflexes, such as your 'cough reflex'. Patients often feel that they have been asleep during the treatment, but in fact you are still awake so we can communicate with you if necessary.

Please note that you have to have someone escort you home after intravenous sedation: this ensures your safety.

Inhalation Sedation

Inhalation sedation gives a lighter effect, but also makes you relaxed and comfortable during treatment. Our children's dental specialist Dr Joanna Johnson (paediatric dentist) often uses this with children, nervous or otherwise.
